Thank you for all our patients who donated to money to our Leeds Hospices Midnight Walk effort. This year we have raised just over £780 to the appeal.
Members of staff at High Field Surgery are participating again in this years Leeds Hospices Midnight Walk which is taking place on Saturday 16th May 2009. The 12 mile walk is a ladies only event. If you wish to donate towards the event please talk to a receptionist at the surgery. Last year we raised just over £900 for the appeal.

The Stroke Association is behind the new campaign to raise awareness of the symptoms of stroke and to highlight the need for emergency treatment in order to reduce long term disability.
A stroke is a brain attack. It happens when the blood supply to the brain is disrupted. Most strokes occur when a blood clot blocks the flow of blood to the brain. Some strokes are caused by bleeding in or around the brain from a burst blood vessel.
FAST requires an assessment of three specific symptoms of stroke.
If the person has failed any one of these tests, you must call 999. Stroke is a medical emergency and by calling 999 you can help someone reach hospital quickly and receive the early treatment they need.

The NHS has launched a new health campaign called Change4Life. You may have seen the adverts on the television. The idea behind the campaign is to help all of us eat well and become more active. We are supporting this campaign and our Practice Nurses can help you as required.
The website has had a bit of a tweak today as I was quiet at the surgery with it being New Year's Eve! I hope everyone has a Happy New Year and are better than me in keeping to their New Year's resolutions. Hopefully you may see me out with my wife on our yellow tandem although it is a bit frosty at the moment. Some practice members will also be taking part in the Jane Tomlinson 10K run in June so don't be surprised if you see some of us pounding the local streets. Please feel free to comment on any aspect of the practice in the forum as we are keen for people to be involved in improving the care we offer at the surgery. We have immunised over 1500 people with influenza vaccine so far this season. If you feel you are at risk (see below) please contact the surgery as we still should be able to immunise you (JS).
Its that time of year again - flu vaccine time. Our first clinic is on 16th October 2008 - please make your appointment by ringing the surgery. They are available free for everyone aged 65 and over and for people with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, asthma and COPD. Unused prescription medicines cost Leeds PCT over £5 million every year. Please only order what you need.
The HPV vaccination programme is beginning in schools in September 2008 initially for girls aged 12 to 13. This vaccination is to help prevent cervical cancer. For more information look at the Department of Health website.
The
British Medical Association is currently running the
Support Your Surgery campaign. GPs are concerned because we want you
to be treated by GPs who see you as patients, not customers. We want the
Government to:

You may have been hearing in the press about the Government's proposals for longer opening hours at your General Practice "to improve access". As usual with Government ideas it isn't as straight forward as it first appears. Many GPs are concerned about the future of General Practice. The BMA have produced a leaflet* to explain our concerns.
Please click play to start (it's nothing to do with us!)
The Leeds PCT have produced a Essential Guide to Health Services* that lists alternatives to using A+E departments.
